News Capsule: Cyclone Montha causes crop damage in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
★ Cyclone ‘Montha’ has severely affected crops such as cotton, paddy, soybean, and maize in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh due to heavy rains. In Telangana, around 1.81 lakh hectares of crops — including 61,000 hectares of cotton — have been damaged, while Andhra Pradesh has suffered losses worth several crores.
★ Due to high moisture content in cotton, farmers are unable to sell their produce at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), as the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) requires moisture levels between 8–12% for procurement. Continuous rains have also delayed harvesting, leading to lower cotton arrivals across the country.
★ In Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Telangana, crop quality has deteriorated, and losses of around 10–15% are expected. Ginning factories are facing difficulties in purchasing due to high moisture and contamination levels, creating uncertainty in the cotton market.
