New Delhi. Due to growers not receiving a fair price for their produce during the current season, it is expected that the area under fennel cultivation will decline for the second consecutive year in the major producing states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. According to information received, fennel cultivation was planned for 1.97 lakh hectares at production centers for the year 2024, which has been reduced to 97 thousand hectares for the year 2025. Sources say that given current prices, it is expected that the area under cultivation will decrease by 10-15 percent this year as well. Fennel sowing at production centers will begin in November, with the new crop arriving in March.

Low Arrivals

Daily arrivals of fennel are declining significantly in the markets of the major producing states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, but prices are suppressed due to low export demand and weak local offtake. Currently, the daily arrival of fennel in the main market, Unjha, is around 1,500 bags. Meanwhile, the arrival in Rajasthan's Nagaur market has remained at 500-600 bags.

Production Decreased

Like last year, farmers have not yet received a fair price for their produce during the current season. It is noteworthy that during the year 2024, the record production of fennel in the country was 3.8 million to 4 million bags. This decreased to 1.8 million to 2 million bags (each bag weighing 55 kg) in the year 2025. However, due to high outstanding stocks, there was constant selling pressure in the market, which prevented prices from rising. In the year 2023, the production of fennel in the country was 2.0 million to 2.2 million bags.

Price

During the current season, the export price of new fennel was ₹113/114 per kg in April, which has gradually declined to ₹78/79. However, even at current prices, export trade is sporadic. Average quality fennel was quoted at ₹90/110 per kg in April in the markets of producing centers, which has now declined to ₹70/85 per kg.

Slow and Rise

Informed sources say that fennel prices are currently being quoted at the lowest level. There is no possibility of a decline in current prices. Experts believe that due to farmers not receiving a fair price for their produce, they will sow fennel on a smaller area this year. Export demand is also expected to increase in the coming days, which is why fennel prices are expected to rise in the coming days.

Exports

After record fennel exports from the country during 2024-25, exports declined sharply during 2025-26. According to data released by the Spices Board, fennel exports declined by 72 percent in quantity and 60 percent in revenue during April-July 2025. According to information received, fennel exports during April-July 2025 amounted to 11,758 tons, with export revenue of ₹154.27 crore. In April-July 2024, fennel exports were 41,701 tons, with export revenue of ₹381.08 crore. It is noteworthy that during 2024-25, fennel exports reached a record 76,586 tons, with revenue of ₹765.44 crore. In the year 2023-24, the export was 39564 tonnes and the income from export was Rs 669.60 crore.
