News Capsule: Canada: Pea, Lentil and Chickpea Markets Under Pressure from New Crop Expectations
★ As the 2026 harvest approaches in Canada, old-crop pea prices are facing pressure from expectations of increased new-crop supplies. Yellow pea prices have remained relatively steady at $8.00–8.50 per bushel FOB farm, while weak demand has softened green pea prices to around $9.00–9.50 per bushel.
★ Lentil markets have seen little change from the previous week, but the overall tone remains softer due to favorable crop prospects. Growing conditions across Canada are generally positive, while below-average monsoon rainfall in India and expectations of a strong Australian red lentil crop are key factors being closely monitored by the market.
★ Large green lentils are trading at approximately $0.23–0.25 per pound FOB farm, while red lentils are holding in a similar range of $0.23–0.25 per pound. Buyers are also showing interest in lower-grade green lentils, depending on quality and downgrade levels.
★ The chickpea market remains relatively stable, with large Kabuli chickpeas trading around $0.26 per pound FOB farm for No. 2 quality. However, delayed planting and weather-related challenges may result in lower chickpea acreage in Canada than previously expected.
★ Market participants believe that the progress of India's monsoon and the outlook for Australia's pulse crop will play a crucial role in determining the direction of global pulse markets in the coming months.
