More than one lakh tonnes of lentils imported in April-May

Mumbai. In the first two months of the current financial year i.e. during April-May 2024, a total of 101607 tonnes of lentils are estimated to be imported in the country,

which is less than the import of 1,28,446 tonnes in the same period of the previous financial year but much more than the import of 20,547 tonnes in 2022-23. Earlier, only 10,129 tonnes of lentils were imported in the first two months of the financial year 2021-22.

During the current year, 65,462 tonnes of lentils were imported in April and 36,145 tonnes in May, whereas last year 66,447 tonnes were imported in April and 61,999 tonnes in May. According to the available data,

during the entire period (April-March) of the financial year 2023-24, the total import of lentils in the country jumped sharply to a historical record level of 16.76 lakh tonnes,

which was about 5.60 lakh tonnes more than the earlier record level of 11,16,174 tonnes in 2020-21. Meanwhile, 6,67,431 tonnes of lentils were imported in 2021-22 and 8,58,438 tonnes in 2022-23.

Lentil is imported in India mainly from Canada and Australia, while it is also imported in small quantities from countries like Turkey, Russia and America.

In May 2024, 19,068 tonnes of lentils were imported from Canada, 12,546 tonnes from Australia, 2620 tonnes from America, 1094 tonnes from Russia and 817 tonnes from Turkey.

The highest quantity of 14,957 tonnes of lentils was imported at JNPT port while 12,910 tonnes were imported at Kolkata, 6190 tonnes at Tuticorin, 1860 tonnes at Mundra and 1028 tonnes at Chennai.
