Mehsana Sees Surge in Cumin, Isabgol & Fennel Exports in 2024-25

Ahmedabad. Gujarat government data shows that during the financial year 2024-25 (April-March), Mehsana district of the state exported spices worth Rs 3995 crore, which mainly included seed spices like cumin, isabgol and fennel.

25 percent of the total exports were shipped to China while 16 percent of the spices were sent to Bangladesh. Apart from this, 10 percent of spices were exported to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 5 percent to the US and 4 percent to Morocco. Gujarat is the leading producer of these three spices.

Aromatic - Dry seed spices are always in demand in the global export market and are produced in abundance in the North Gujarat division.

These spices enhance the taste and aroma of food items while also being beneficial for health. The world famous Unjha Mandi is located in Mehsana district, which is considered to be the largest trading center of these spices.

According to the data received, 54,410 tonnes of cumin arrived in the premises (wholesale market) of Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Unjha between 15 February and 10 April 2025, which was 17.5 percent more than the arrival of 46,313 tonnes in the same period of the year 2024.

There is a huge business of cumin, fennel, isabgol and rapda (mustard seed) along with some other spices in Unjha Mandi and traders from all over the country buy goods from there.

More than 800 firms are active in the field of export and domestic trade of cumin and other seed spices in Unjha Mandi.

According to the information received, during the financial year 2022-23, cumin and other spices worth Rs 2904 crore (36.167 crore dollars) were exported from Mehsana district, which jumped 42 percent to Rs 4127 crore (49.895 crore dollars) in the financial year 2023-24,

but in the financial year 2024-25 it came down to Rs 3995 crore. Last year, the production and export of cumin was affected due to unfavorable weather conditions.

During the last Rabi season in Gujarat, the sowing area of ​​​​cumin was 4.76 lakh hectares, which was 25 percent more than the three-year average area.

Similarly, the sowing area of ​​​​fennel was recorded at 57 thousand hectares and the area of ​​​​isabgol was recorded at 27 thousand hectares.
