Centre Initiates Vigorous Preparations to Tackle Potential El Niño Crisis

New Delhi. The Central Government has commenced vigorous preparations to confront challenges such as the potential impact of the El Niño weather cycle and the likelihood of reduced rainfall during the monsoon season. The Union Agriculture Minister is demonstrating particular alertness and proactivity in this regard. He has affirmed that, under all circumstances, safeguarding the interests of farmers will be accorded the highest priority.
According to the Agriculture Minister, this is not a time for panic or anxiety, but rather a time to undertake concrete and practical preparations tailored to the specific requirements. States and districts where reduced rainfall is anticipated require special monitoring and prompt action. Necessary directives regarding this have already been issued to the concerned officials. Furthermore, the government's focus remains centered on seed supply, water availability, soil moisture levels, and alternative cropping strategies, ensuring that timely assistance can be extended to farmers.
As per the Agriculture Minister, water levels in major dams and reservoirs across the country are currently at normal levels, which could provide significant support for the cultivation of Kharif crops. Emphasizing the importance of delivering mobile advisories to farmers—including information on pests and diseases, as well as guidance on selecting appropriate crops—the Agriculture Minister asserted that contingency or disaster management plans must not remain confined merely to papers and files; rather, their meaningful and positive outcomes must be clearly evident on the ground.
During a high-level review meeting, the Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers' Welfare, and Rural Development engaged in serious deliberations on critical issues such as the monsoon outlook, the potential impact of El Niño, water availability, seed procurement arrangements, and the preparedness of state governments to tackle potential crises; he also issued necessary instructions to the officials present. He stated that while the Central Government is undertaking comprehensive preparations on its part, it also expects the state governments to demonstrate equal seriousness and commitment in addressing this matter.
