Maharashtra: Sharp Decline in Kharif Pulses Sowing Amidst Weak Rainfall
★ According to the Maharashtra Agriculture Department, as of July 7, 2025, kharif pulses have been sown on 14.9 lakh hectares, which is 29,895 hectares less than the 15.2 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
Key Crop Insights:
* Tuar (Arhar) sowing has declined by 10,009 hectares, reaching 9.84 lakh hectares, compared to 9.94 lakh hectares in 2024.
* Moong has seen the sharpest decline of 16,583 hectares. Sowing has dropped to 1.78 lakh hectares this year, down from 1.94 lakh hectares last year.
* Urad is the only pulse showing a slight improvement, with the sown area increasing from 2,92,134 hectares to 2,98,099 hectares.
★ Delayed monsoon rains in many parts of Maharashtra are affecting sowing activities, raising concerns for the upcoming season. If rainfall does not improve in the coming days, the sowing gap may widen further.

Karnataka:
★ Several regions in Karnataka, especially those bordering Maharashtra, are also facing water shortages. It is important to note that both Maharashtra and Karnataka are major producers of tur, and any crop stress in either state could widen the supply-demand gap once again.
★ The next 15 to 20 days will be critical for the fate of the kharif pulse crops.
