Magaj watermelon prices likely to rise due to stoppage of imports from Sudan and low stock

New Delhi. Since the beginning of the current financial year, there has been no or negligible import of Magaj watermelon from the African country Sudan to India,
while its stock is also low in the domestic sector. On the other hand, the season of its demand and consumption is about to begin, due to which there is a possibility of an atmosphere of rise and strength in its prices in the coming time. In important producing states like Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, the sowing area and production of Magaj watermelon is decreasing. Hybrid variety is being cultivated more, which has less seeds.
By the end of last financial year i.e. 31 March 2024, due to import of watermelon seeds in large quantities from some other countries including Sudan, its supply and availability in the domestic sector had increased and prices had softened. Its price had come down to around Rs 400 per kg.
But due to the demand of consumer industries at lower prices, the price has started improving. Sweets manufacturers are showing good interest in its purchase. Within the last few days, its price has improved to Rs 460-470 per kg.
As far as the Desi Magaj Watermelon is concerned, its price had reached a high of Rs 820-830 per kg last year. Since the goods are not coming from Sudan,
the stockists are busy buying Magaj Watermelon in large quantities at lower prices since the beginning of the current month. Some analysts say that it will not be surprising if the price of Magaj Watermelon,
which is being sold at the current price level of Rs 460/470 per kg, jumps to Rs 600/650 per kg in the coming months because its stock is low and the demand is expected to remain strong.
