Singapore: Although the El Niño weather cycle raises concerns about the impact on oil palm production in Southeast Asia, the actual effects may only become apparent next year.
Meanwhile, Indonesia and Malaysia currently hold massive carryover stocks of palm oil, and the peak production season is underway. If export performance remains lackluster, pressure on palm oil prices could intensify in the near future. Indications suggest that palm oil production is rising in September, following an increase in August.
Palm oil production and stocks in Malaysia are rising, whereas imports by India are not increasing commensurately. Analysts predict that Malaysia's palm oil stocks could exceed 3 million tonnes, potentially exerting downward pressure on prices.
Although rainfall in Malaysia has been somewhat below average, it has not impacted palm oil production. By the end of August, palm oil stocks there had risen to 2.82 million tonnes. CPO futures prices are currently trending downwards.
