New Delhi: The Central Government has approved the proposal to procure 9.67 lakh tonnes of pigeon pea (tur dal) from farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) during the current Kharif marketing season of 2025-26 in the southern state of Karnataka.
Notably, Union Minister of Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Pralhad Joshi (who is a Member of Parliament from Karnataka), had sent a letter to the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, urging him to approve the procurement of this important pulse under the PSS in Karnataka, a leading tur dal producing state.
In response to this letter, the Union Agriculture Minister informed the Food Minister that, based on the proposal received from the Karnataka government, the Ministry of Agriculture has granted approval for the implementation of PSS in the state and has approved the proposal to procure 9.67 lakh tonnes of tur dal from farmers at MSP during the current Kharif marketing season of 2025-26.
The procurement period for tur dal will be 90 days, effective from the date the process begins. The Karnataka government will decide when to start the procurement of tur dal from farmers.
In some parts of Karnataka, the harvesting of the early-sown tur dal crop has already begun sporadically, and the pace is expected to pick up soon.
The Central Government has fixed the Minimum Support Price for tur dal at Rs. 8000 per quintal for the 2025-26 season, an increase of Rs. 450 from Rs. 7550 per quintal in the 2024-25 season, while the wholesale market price is currently lower.
The Central Government has already expressed its commitment to ensure 100% procurement of tur dal from farmers at the Minimum Support Price.
The quantity of tur dal in the central buffer stock is currently about 50 percent less than the permissible limit.
As a result, the government needs to procure it. It is now up to the Karnataka government to decide when to start purchasing tur dal.
