New Delhi. Although the estimate of the total sugarcane production area at the national level during 2025 by the apex organization of the indigenous sugar industry - Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) is very close to the government figures, there is a lot of difference in the figures for the year 2024.

According to the Union Agriculture Ministry, till August 4, 2025, the total sugarcane production area has increased to 57.30 lakh hectares, which is 1.60 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 55.70 lakh hectares during the same period last year.

On the other hand, ISMA believes that the sugarcane sowing area in the year 2024 was 57.11 lakh hectares, which has improved by 13 thousand hectares this time and reached 57.24 lakh hectares.

It is worth noting that ISMA's estimate of sugarcane sowing area is based on the image obtained from satellite, while the estimate of the Ministry of Agriculture is determined on the basis of data received from various states. Sugarcane production had decreased significantly in the 2024-25 season.

The latest data of ISMA shows that during 2025, compared to the year 2024, the sugarcane production area jumped from 13.82 lakh hectares to 14.93 lakh hectares in Maharashtra and from 6.40 lakh hectares to 6.76 lakh hectares in Karnataka, but on the other hand, its sowing area decreased from 23.30 lakh hectares to 22.57 lakh hectares in Uttar Pradesh,

slipped from 2.07 lakh hectares to 2.05 lakh hectares in Tamil Nadu and fell from 2.31 lakh hectares to 2.22 lakh hectares in Gujarat. In other producing states of the country, the area of sugarcane has also come down from 9.21 lakh hectares in the year 2024 to 8.71 lakh hectares this time.

These states include Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana etc. Apart from this, sugarcane is also cultivated in a limited area in Rajasthan, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

The data of sugarcane sowing area given by ISMA and the Ministry of Agriculture for the current year is more than last year and the weather and monsoon conditions also remain favorable to a great extent,

due to which there is a possibility of improvement in the yield rate and yield of sugarcane as well as the average recovery rate of sugar. The weather of August will prove to be very important for the sugarcane crop.
