India – Desi Chickpea Import Estimates: Sharp Decline in Imports. What Lies Ahead for the Market?
★ In the April–June quarter of FY 2025–26, India’s total estimated import of desi chickpeas (HS Code: 07132020) is expected to be 19,303 metric tons. This marks a sharp drop of approximately 22,350 tons compared to 41,653 metric tons imported during the same period in FY 2024–25.
Details for FY 2025–26 so far:
★ In April 2025, chickpea imports stood at 14,336 tons, significantly higher than 2,371 tons imported in April 2024.
★ In May 2025, imports dropped to 4,607 tons, compared to 27,577 tons in May 2024.
★ For June 2025, imports are estimated to be just 360 tons, as opposed to 11,705 tons in June 2024.
★ Despite the spike in April, the sharp decline in May and June led to an overall quarterly drop of over 54% in chickpea imports.
★ India recorded a total of 15.06 lakh tons of chickpea imports in FY 2024–25 — a record high — with massive imports in January (5.03 lakh tons) and February (3.80 lakh tons).
★ Australia’s new crop is expected to begin arriving in October.
★ Festival-driven domestic demand is currently supporting prices, and market indicators suggest a strong possibility of further price increases in the near future.
