Regina. Driven by strong domestic and export demand, the lentil trade in Western Canadian markets is performing well. Buyers are showing keen interest in all three categories: large green lentils, small green lentils, and red lentils.
It is understood that the reliance of foreign importers on Canadian lentils has increased due to delays in the arrival of new-crop lentils from Australia and disruptions to shipments from Russia.
However, Australia is expected to see an excellent lentil harvest this season; the two primary producing states—South Australia and Victoria—have not only expanded their planted acreage but are also anticipating higher-than-average yields, thanks to favorable weather and rainfall conditions. Harvesting of the new lentil crop has already begun there.
In Western Canada—particularly in Saskatchewan, the leading producing province—the FOB farm-gate price for 'Number 2' grade large green lentils has improved to 29–31 cents per pound,
while the trading price for red lentils remains steady at 24 cents per pound. Some buyers are looking to secure contracts for lentil deliveries scheduled for the first quarter of next year. Meanwhile, a significant decline in green lentil production is projected for Canada this season.
