Imports of Tur (Pigeon Pea) from Brazil Expected to Begin After Urad

Mumbai: While India is already importing Urad (black gram) from the Latin American nation of Brazil, imports of Tur (pigeon pea) are also likely to commence soon. It is anticipated that shipments of Brazilian Tur will arrive at Indian ports within the next few months.

The Chairman of the apex trade body, the India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), stated that India will continue to import large quantities of Tur from abroad, and Brazil will be added to the list of supplier nations this year. If Brazilian Tur receives phytosanitary clearance, imports into India could begin immediately; the product is expected to secure this clearance soon.

It is noteworthy that Brazilian farmers began producing Tur for the Indian market due to the concerted efforts of the association. The association had assured Brazilian producers and exporters that India was ready to purchase the crop if they cultivated it. According to the association, export shipments of Tur from Brazil are set to begin in October-November and reach India by the end of December.

While the volume of Tur exports from Brazil may remain limited—between 20,000 and 30,000 tonnes—during the current year, significant quantities could be imported into India starting next year. Notably, Brazilian farmers had previously started cultivating Urad with the Indian market specifically in mind; Brazil has now become the second-largest supplier of Urad to India, following Myanmar. In the future, it could also emerge as a leading exporter of Tur.
