Import of more than 26 thousand tonnes of kidney beans in April-May

New Delhi. There are indications of an increase in the import of kidney beans this year as compared to last year. In the first two months of the current financial year,

its import is estimated to increase to 26,237 tonnes, which is much higher than 19,263 tonnes last year and 10,048 tonnes in 2022.

During April 2024, as compared to April 2023, the import of kidney beans jumped from 7251 tonnes to 13,616 tonnes and improved from 12,012 tonnes to 12,621 tonnes in May.

The imports of the financial year 2023-24 were much higher than 82,736 tonnes but less than the total imports of 1,37,938 tonnes in 2021-22. Earlier, 1,06,362 tonnes of kidney beans were imported in the financial year 2020-21 and 1,14,935 tonnes in 2019-20.

Like kidney beans, the import of cowpea is also increasing well. A total of 15,498 tonnes of cowpea was imported in two months, including 7741 tonnes in April 2024 and 7757 tonnes in May.

In comparison, a total of 3813 tonnes of cowpea was imported, including 1970 tonnes in April 2023 and 1843 tonnes in May.

5221 tonnes of cowpea was imported in April-May of the year 2022 and 3022 tonnes of cowpea was imported in the same months of 2021.

During the entire period (April-March) of the financial year 2023-24, 31,856 tonnes of cowpea was imported in the country and 33,465 tonnes in 2022-23, whereas its import quantity was 71,890 tonnes in 2021-22, 38,789 tonnes in 2020-21 and 77,296 tonnes in 2019-20.
