Canada’s June Exports of Lentils, Peas, Chickpeas Decline

Vancouver. There was a decline in the export of lentils, peas and chickpeas from Canada during the month of June as compared to May, but the shipment performance of the first 11 months of the marketing season was quite good. The data for the last month-July is yet to come out.

It is worth noting that the marketing season of pulses in Canada starts in August and ends in July next year. In this regard, the new marketing season of 2025-26 has formally started from 1 August 2025.

Data from the government body - Statistics Canada (Stats Can) shows that in June, Canada exported 79,179 tonnes of lentils, which was much less than the shipment of 1,08,281 tonnes in May, but still the total export of lentils increased to 17.72 lakh tonnes in the first 11 months i.e.

from August 2024 to June 2025, which was 2.31 lakh tonnes more than the shipment of 15.41 lakh tonnes in the same period of the 2023-24 season. Canada is the leading exporter of lentils. In the first 11 months of the current marketing season, India was the largest buyer of Canadian lentils, importing 5,40,435 tonnes.

This was followed by Turkey importing 2,47,266 tonnes and the United Arab Emirates importing 2,04,955 tonnes. During the 2024-25 season, exports to India increased by 9.6 percent and exports to Turkey increased by 88.9 percent compared to 2023-24.

The Canadian Ministry of Agriculture has estimated the total export of lentils to reach 20 lakh tonnes during the entire marketing season of 2024-25.

As far as peas are concerned, its exports fell by 48 percent to 52,490 tonnes in June as compared to May, but still the total shipment of the first 11 months reached 21.48 lakh tonnes, which was less than the export of 23.83 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season.

Its exports to India were recorded almost equal to the previous season i.e. 8,20,620 tonnes and it remained the most prominent buyer. In contrast, exports to China declined by 28 percent to 7,20,326 tonnes. Similarly, exports to the US fell 36.2 percent to 97,597 tonnes,

but shipments to Bangladesh jumped 50.7 percent to 2,09,647 tonnes. For the entire marketing season of 2024-25, the Ministry of Agriculture has estimated a total export of 23 lakh tonnes of peas from Canada, which may prove to be correct.
