Global trade of pulses reduced due to low production of peas and lentils

The global trade of pulses has faced a decline, particularly due to reduced production of peas and lentils, according to a joint statement from the International Grains Council, India Middle East Agri Alliance, and India Subcontinent Agri Foundation.

This has led to a slight drop in the total global demand for pulse imports, with projections for 2024 standing at 214 lakh tonnes.

However, despite this decline, the global trade of pulses still remains higher than the historical average.

The reduction in pulse imports was notable in regions like China and the European Union, where pea imports dropped slightly. Meanwhile, India saw a significant increase in its pea imports.

Lentil imports, on the other hand, decreased in South Asia and Near East Asia, with India also witnessing a relative decline in its lentil purchases.

Despite these challenges, the overall global pulse production has been increasing over the years. However, further efforts are necessary to boost production to meet the rising global demand for pulses, which plays a crucial role in food security worldwide.

This development highlights the importance of pulses, especially in ensuring a stable and progressive food system, as emphasized during the World Pulses Day event held on February 10th.
