Expected Increase in Canadian Pea Exports to China and India

Vancouver. The Black Sea shipping route is currently blocked and unsafe, severely hindering pea exports from Russia to China and India—a situation from which Canada is expected to benefit.

Exports of Canadian peas to these two major markets are projected to rise significantly. Trade analysts believe that Canada will meet its export targets for peas to China. Meanwhile, in India, there is uncertainty surrounding pulse production; sowing for chickpeas, lentils, and peas is currently underway.

While Canadian pea exports are proceeding at a normal pace, the volume of shipments is expected to accelerate. Export volumes have already increased over the last 10 weeks, and prices have shown some strengthening. This season, Canada has seen lower pea production, and the quality of the crop has also been affected.

Although there are substantial carry-over stocks, there are concerns regarding their quality. Consequently, prices for high-quality yellow and green peas are expected to remain firm in the coming months.

The price gap between these two varieties is narrowing. India currently permits the import of only yellow peas, which are subject to a 30 percent customs duty. In Canada, the price of yellow peas has risen to $9.00–$9.25 per bushel.
