Expectations of an Increase in Mustard Sowing Area and Production

New Delhi. With wholesale market prices reaching new record highs and a significant increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP), farmers' interest and enthusiasm for mustard cultivation are expected to rise sharply during this year's Rabi season, potentially leading to an expansion in both the area under cultivation and total production.

Interestingly, as of last week, the area sown with mustard stood at 2.26 lakh hectares—notably lower than the 3.10 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. However, the sowing season has only just begun; the pace of sowing is expected to accelerate significantly in the coming weeks.

Typically, the sowing of Rabi crops gains momentum alongside the harvesting of Kharif crops. Wholesale market prices for mustard are currently hovering above ₹8,000 per quintal, and a substantial decline in the near future appears unlikely. Furthermore, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for mustard has been raised by ₹413, bringing it to ₹6,613 per quintal.
