Chickpea Sowing Conditions in Australia: Favorable in Some Regions, Poor in Others

Hobart. Chickpea sowing has commenced in Australia; however, given the prevailing weather conditions, the pace of sowing is not particularly rapid. While sowing is progressing well in some areas, its momentum appears sluggish in others.

In the states of Victoria and South Australia, consistent rainfall has ensured adequate soil moisture levels, meaning farmers in these regions are facing few difficulties with sowing. Conversely, conditions in the states of Queensland and New South Wales are currently considered more favorable for the sowing of lentils.

In addition to a projected decline in the total area under cultivation, there are apprehensions that the average yield rate for chickpeas in Australia may also decrease this season, potentially leading to a significant drop in overall production.

During the 2025-26 season, Australia witnessed a robust production of approximately 1.9 million tonnes of chickpeas; however, for the 2026-27 season, production is projected to contract to a range of 1.3 to 1.4 million tonnes.

Australia has already completed substantial exports of chickpeas. Producers there currently hold only limited remaining stocks, which they are unwilling to sell at lower price points.

Conversely, due to subdued global demand, traders and exporters are hesitant to procure the crop from farmers at higher prices. Consequently, producers have adopted a cautious stance in light of the anticipated decline in the upcoming harvest.
