The Sri Lankan government has granted approval for private importers to continue importing rice until January 10, 2025. This decision follows a proposal approved by the Union Cabinet in an important meeting.
The initial rice import authorization, which had been set to expire on December 20, 2024, was extended after the Customs Department had earlier suspended imports until a formal notification was issued in the Government Gazette.
During the first phase of this import program, about 67,000 tons of rice were brought into the country, primarily from India.
This consisted of 28,500 tons of raw (white) rice and 38,500 tons of Nadu rice. The rice imports during this period generated significant revenue, with the Customs Department collecting 4.30 billion Sri Lankan rupees in customs duties.
The decision to extend the import period was made in light of concerns over the potential decrease in domestic rice production, which has contributed to rising rice prices in the country.
By allowing the import of rice until January 10, 2025, the government aims to stabilize the rice market and prevent any disruptions in supply.
