Mysore. Due to good rains of the southwest monsoon, cotton sowing has also started along with other Kharif crops in the southern states and its pace is likely to increase further.
According to trade analysts, the softening of the price of red chilli may increase the attraction of farmers towards cotton cultivation in Telangana.
However, due to the strong trend in the prices of cotton seeds, farmers may face some difficulty.
Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are the major cotton producing states in South India and this time its area is expected to increase there.
Because some red chilli producers there may turn towards cotton. Two-three monsoon rains have occurred in many parts of Karnataka and Telangana, which is facilitating farmers to start sowing the crop.
Before the sowing season started, the price of cotton had strengthened in Telangana, which has increased the enthusiasm of the farmers.
The monsoon, which arrived in India on May 30, has so far covered most parts of Kerala, most of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and some areas of Maharashtra.
A huge increase in the sale of cotton seeds has been observed in the southern states for the last three-four days. Farmers have bought about 30 to 50 percent of the required seeds and sowing has been completed in about 10 percent of the targeted area.
However, the area under cotton cultivation may decrease this time in areas like Kurnool. There is also a possibility of a 10-15 percent decline in the area under cotton cultivation in northern India.
The price of cotton in Karnataka and Telangana has reached Rs 7500/7600 per quintal, which is higher than the minimum support price.
