Pea Prices Rise Amid Improved Buying Activity

Kanpur: The pea market witnessed a firm trend during the current week. Following a decline in prices over the preceding days, selling pressure subsided at the lower price levels; conversely, buying activity in the market increased as demand remained robust. Consequently, pea prices maintained an upward trajectory throughout the week. According to traders, the sowing of white peas has been relatively weak this year; as a result, the anticipated pressure from the arrival of the new crop has not yet materialized in the producing markets. Amidst limited arrivals, demand from stockists and pulse millers has begun to rise gradually, thereby providing support to market prices. The market sentiment remains firm as traders continue to procure stocks at the prevailing lower rates. Market experts suggest that, considering the current market arrivals and field conditions, domestic production of white peas this year is likely to be significantly lower compared to the previous year. Preliminary estimates indicate that production could witness a decline of approximately 50 percent. On the other hand, arrivals of green peas are currently surging in the markets of the producing regions. Farmers are actively selling green peas, leading to increased availability in the markets. Nevertheless, the market continues to exhibit a bullish sentiment driven by the limited supply of white peas and sustained strong demand. *iGrain India* opines that if the supply of white peas remains limited and demand levels stay robust in the coming period, the firmness in prices is likely to persist.
Canada
According to data released by Statistics Canada—the country's official statistical agency—a significant increase has been recorded in pea exports from the nation. While a total of 125,111 tonnes of peas were exported from Canada during December 2025, this figure surged to 190,480 tonnes in January 2026. This clearly indicates that, with the advent of the new year, the supply of Canadian peas in the global market has witnessed a sharp acceleration. According to statistics, a significant quantity of yellow peas was exported from Canada to India during the month of January. During this period, a total of 81,697 tonnes of yellow peas were shipped to India. As India ranks among the leading importers of peas, the supply arriving from Canada inevitably impacts the domestic market as well.

Due to a slowdown in selling activity by importers coupled with an increase in buying interest, the prices of imported peas witnessed a rise of ₹50–75 per quintal during the current week. Following this increase, by the weekend, prices at the Mumbai port reached ₹4,025 per quintal for Canadian peas and ₹3,925 per quintal for Russian peas. Similarly, at the Mundra port, prices were recorded at approximately ₹4,000 per quintal for Canadian peas and ₹3,900 per quintal for Russian peas. Consequently, the domestic market also exhibited a bullish trend. In Kanpur, pea prices surged by ₹200 per quintal this week, settling at approximately ₹4,250–4,300 per quintal by the weekend. Likewise, driven by robust demand, the Lalitpur market witnessed a jump of ₹300 per quintal in pea prices, bringing the weekend rates to the range of ₹3,700–4,300 per quintal. The Mahoba market also recorded a rise of ₹200 per quintal this week, with prices climbing to ₹3,800–4,400 per quintal. Sustained strong demand led to a bullish trend for 'Rath' peas, where prices rose by ₹300 per quintal this week, reaching ₹4,100–4,300 per quintal by the weekend. Meanwhile, the Urai market also registered an increase of approximately ₹200 per quintal, pushing prices up to the range of ₹3,900–4,150 per quintal. Driven by broad-based bullish sentiment and sustained strong demand, prices for Madhya Pradesh peas recorded an increase of ₹200–400 per quintal this week. Consequently, by the end of the week, prices settled at ₹3,750–4,250 per quintal in Damoh and ₹3,500–3,900 per quintal in Bina.
Pea Dal
Supported by the upward trend in pea prices and rising demand, pea dal prices witnessed an increase of ₹100 per quintal during the current week. By the weekend, prices reached ₹4,500–4,700 per quintal in Kanpur and ₹4,600–4,800 per quintal in Indore.
