News Capsule: India’s groundnut output likely to rise 3% in 2026-27: USDA
★ According to a report by the USDA, India’s groundnut (peanut) production is expected to increase by around 3% to 7.75 million tonnes in 2026-27. Farmers are likely to shift from cotton to groundnut, driven by better price realisation and stable demand.
★ The area under groundnut is projected to expand by about 2% to 5.7 million hectares. Adoption of high-yielding varieties, particularly in key producing states like Gujarat, is expected to support higher output.
★ Strong demand is likely to push crushing up by around 2%, while groundnut meal production is estimated to rise 3% to 1.8 million tonnes. Increased consumption in both food and feed segments, especially in Gujarat and Rajasthan, is expected to drive this growth.
★ Meanwhile, cotton acreage may decline by around 2% as farmers shift towards more profitable crops. Overall oilseed production in 2026-27 is forecast at about 41 million tonnes, slightly lower year-on-year.
