Fluctuations in Paddy and Rice Prices Amidst Normal Trading Activity
New Delhi: Arrivals of paddy in the wholesale markets of major producing states continue to decline steadily, and bulk buyers are exercising caution in their procurement. Arrivals of general-grade non-Basmati paddy have either ceased entirely or become negligible, while 'A' grade and Basmati paddy are also arriving in very limited quantities. In some states, the harvest of the Rabi-season paddy crop has commenced; consequently, supplies in these regions are expected to increase in the near future.
Delhi
During the week spanning April 11 to 17, daily paddy arrivals at Delhi's Narela market ranged between 3,000 and 4,500 bags. During this period, the price of '1121' variety paddy declined by approximately ₹140 per quintal. Similarly, the '1509 Hand-cut' variety witnessed some softness in prices; however, the '1509 Combine-harvested' and '1718' varieties saw a price recovery of ₹70 and ₹50 per quintal, respectively.
Chhattisgarh
In the Bhatapara and Rajim markets of Chhattisgarh, paddy prices recorded some fluctuations due to limited arrivals and subdued trading activity. In Uttar Pradesh, a trickle of paddy arrivals is being observed in a few markets, notably Shahjahanpur and Aligarh. Meanwhile, in the Bundi and Kota markets of Rajasthan, daily paddy arrivals have dropped significantly compared to previous levels.
Rice
As far as rice is concerned, exporters have begun to show increased interest in its procurement. Although the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has been formally announced, the situation remains uncertain due to the U.S. blockade and warnings issued by Iran. Iran has stated that only commercial vessels will be permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and these vessels must strictly adhere to the routes designated by Iran.
Amritsar
During the week under review, an increase of ₹100–300 per quintal was recorded in the prices of various varieties and grades of rice in Bhatapara, Raichur, Amritsar Nagar (Uttarakhand), Bundi, and some other markets.
