Significant Rise in Mustard Prices Driven by Strong Demand

New Delhi: Due to lower-than-normal market arrivals and sustained strong demand from oil millers, traders, and stockists, mustard prices recorded an increase ranging from ₹100 to ₹250 per quintal during the week of May 23–29.
42% Condition Mustard
The price of 42% condition mustard surged by ₹250 in Delhi to reach ₹7,850 per quintal, while in Jaipur, it firmed up by ₹75 to hit a high of ₹8,025 per quintal. Even mustard of average general quality is consistently trading above ₹7,000 per quintal, thereby ensuring attractive returns for farmers.

During the week under review, mustard prices in the *mandis* (markets) of Haryana generally rose by ₹100–₹200; however, in Sirsa, prices jumped by ₹300 to reach ₹7,700 per quintal. Markets in Madhya Pradesh also witnessed a price rise of ₹100–₹200. In Uttar Pradesh, mustard prices in Hapur surged by ₹450 to reach ₹8,150 per quintal, while in Agra, they rose by ₹160 to touch a high of ₹8,525–₹8,850 per quintal. It appears likely that mustard prices could reach new record-high levels this season. The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for mustard has been fixed at ₹6,200 per quintal.
Market Arrivals
The average daily arrival of mustard in the markets of major producing states was recorded between 6.50 lakh and 7.50 lakh bags (each bag weighing 50 kg). Specifically, arrivals stood at 7 lakh bags each on May 23 and 25; 7.50 lakh bags each on May 26 and 27; 6.50 lakh bags on May 28; and 7 lakh bags on May 29.
Mustard Oil (Kacchi Ghani)
During the week under review, an increase ranging from ₹20 to ₹70 per 10 kg was recorded in the prices of both Expeller and Kacchi Ghani mustard oils. In Delhi, the price of Expeller oil firmed up by ₹20 to reach ₹1,575, while in Hapur, the price of Kacchi Ghani oil surged by ₹70 to stand at ₹1,750 per 10 kg.
Mustard Cake (DOC)
Prices of Mustard Cake and DOC also witnessed a significant increase. The rising cost of raw mustard seeds led to higher production costs for these commodities.
