New Delhi. Due to the re-activation of the southwest monsoon from June 16, heavy rains are occurring in many parts of the country, leading to a rise in the water levels of dams and reservoirs.
According to the weekly bulletin of the Central Water Commission, the water stock in 161 major dams and reservoirs across the country has reached 66.449 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is 36.42 percent of the total storage capacity of 182.444 BCM.
Last week, these reservoirs held 31.81 percent of their capacity. This current water stock is 75 percent higher than last year and 53 percent above the 10-year average.
According to the Meteorological Department, monsoon rainfall at the national level was 31 percent below the normal average until June 15. However, it is now 9 percent above average.
In recent days, several regions have received torrential rain, resulting in rising dam water levels. Nonetheless, certain areas are still facing rainfall deficits, including Bihar,
Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Delhi-NCR. This disparity is attributed to the uneven distribution of monsoon rainfall. These regions may receive better rainfall in the coming days.
Due to heavy rainfall in the second half of June, the water levels in reservoirs across almost all regions are reportedly increasing. For water storage purposes, the country is divided into five subdivisions.
The only reservoir in Goa is already full. Similarly, the Sapua Dam in Odisha and the Shatrunji Dam in Gujarat have reached full capacity. This development is expected to support the sowing of Kharif crops.
According to the Union Agriculture Ministry, by June 20 of the current year, the total sown area of Kharif crops had increased to 137.84 lakh hectares,
which is approximately 13 lakh hectares or 10 percent more than the 124.88 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. Heavy rainfall continues in many parts of the country, and the peak monsoon months of July and August are yet to arrive.
