Urgent need to open export of wheat bran

New Delhi. Due to tough challenge and stiff competition from maize residue product - Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS), the domestic demand and price of wheat bran has reduced significantly due to which flour millers / processors are suffering huge financial losses and they are strongly demanding the government to allow its export.
According to industry analysts, due to increased supply and availability of DDGS and low level price, the demand of wheat bran is being badly affected and its price has reduced significantly. Due to this, the income of the millers has decreased significantly and to meet this, they are being forced to increase the price of other wheat products - flour, maida and semolina.
It is worth mentioning that in the process of milling-processing of wheat, about 30 percent bran and 70 percent other products are produced, which clearly indicates that bran business is very important for millers / processors.
But at present there is a huge shortage of buyers for this because DDGS is available at a much cheaper price and the protein content in it is also more than bran.
One problem with wheat husk (choker or wheat bran) is that its self life is limited, so it cannot be stored and kept safe for a long time. Millers / processors have no other option but to sell it as soon as possible.
In view of the increasing difficulty of millers / processors due to lack of buyers amid huge stock, the government should decide to open the export of wheat bran as soon as possible so that the income of the millers remains intact and they are not forced to increase the price of other wheat products.
If the government wants, it can ensure the export of 5-6 lakh tonnes of bran through any central agency. This will provide huge relief to the millers / processors.
