Urad Imports from Brazil May Rise 25%: IPGA
★ According to the India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), India’s urad (black matpe) imports from Brazil may increase by at least 25% this year. India imported 2.37 lakh tonnes from Brazil in 2025, and the volume could rise to around 3 lakh tonnes this year.
★ Brazilian farmers received good prices last year, prompting them to expand acreage, and a higher crop output is expected. In Brazil, sowing takes place during February–March, and harvesting is completed within about 90 days.
★ Domestically, production remains lower. India’s total urad imports in 2025 rose 41% to 10.67 lakh tonnes, compared to the previous year. Of this, 8.09 lakh tonnes came from Myanmar and 2.37 lakh tonnes from Brazil. Urad imports are currently duty-free until the end of March.
★ As per the first advance estimates, India’s 2025-26 kharif urad production is projected to decline to 12.05 lakh tonnes, down from 13.41 lakh tonnes last year.
