Belagavi. The Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane in Karnataka for the current 2025-26 marketing season was fixed at ₹3,000 per tonne, but producers were dissatisfied and wanted the price to be fixed at least at ₹3,500 per tonne.

Sugarcane farmers in major growing areas of northern Karnataka, including Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, and Haveri, have been staging massive protests for the past few days to press this demand.

Following inter-state government intervention, sugar mills agreed to increase the price by ₹100 to ₹3,300 per tonne, and the farmers withdrew their agitation after the announcement.

Announcing this, the Karnataka Chief Minister stated that sugarcane farmers would receive an additional ₹100 above the FRP of ₹3,200 per tonne, with sugar mills and the state government contributing ₹50 each. This FRP for sugarcane will not include the cost of harvesting and transportation.

It is noteworthy that Karnataka is the third largest producer of sugarcane and sugar in the country. Sugarcane is cultivated on a large scale in its northern part.

This time the sugarcane acreage in the state has increased and the condition of the crop is said to be very good, due to which a huge increase in sugar production is expected.

Sugar mills will pay Rs 3250 per tonne to sugarcane farmers, while the state government will also pay Rs 50 per tonne. This time the total crushing of sugarcane in the state is expected to increase to more than 6 crore tonnes.
