News Capsule: Almond Prices May Stay Firm as US Imports Surge; India Market in Focus
★ Global almond prices are likely to remain firm as concerns over Spain’s production and a sharp rise in exports to the US tighten the market outlook. The developments could also affect the Indian almond market, which relies significantly on imports to meet domestic demand.
★ In Spain’s Córdoba region, a spider mite infestation has raised concerns about almond production. Agricultural organisation ASAJA Córdoba said the pest has caused leaf drop and could reduce production by 5-10% from initial estimates. The infestation could also affect next year’s crop.
★ Spain had initially projected almond production at around 11,000 tonnes, nearly 30% higher than last year, supported by abundant rainfall during autumn, winter and early spring. The rains helped replenish reservoirs after several years of drought. However, the pest outbreak has weakened the production outlook.
★ Spain’s almond exports fell 14% year-on-year to 115,764 tonnes during August 2025-June 2026, according to provisional government data. Germany remained the country’s largest trading partner, although shipments declined 17%.
In contrast, exports to the US surged nearly eight-fold from the previous year. Shipments to other major non-European destinations, including Egypt and Turkey, declined by double digits.
★ For India, the key takeaway is that production risks in Spain and stronger US demand could tighten global almond availability. If the trend continues, higher international prices could increase the cost of imported almonds and support domestic prices in India.
Going forward, Spain’s final crop size, US buying demand and global almond prices will remain key factors for the Indian market.
