Sugar production in Maharashtra increased by about 5 lakh tonnes to above 110 lakh tonnes

Pune. During the current marketing season 2023-24 in Maharashtra, the total production of sugar increased to a high of 110.20 lakh tonnes, which is about 4.90 lakh tonnes more than the gross production of the 2022-23 season.
Kolhapur division produced the highest amount of 28.10 lakh tonnes of sugar where 40 mills are located. However, Solapur division has the highest number of 50 units, if the sugar production there was less than Kolhapur division.
A total of 1053.30 lakh tonnes of sugarcane was crushed in Maharashtra during the 2022-23 season, which increased to 1073.08 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season. Similarly, the average recovery rate of sugar from sugarcane also improved from 9.88 percent to 10.27 percent.
During the 2023-24 season, sugarcane crushing started in a total of 207 sugar mills in Maharashtra, which includes 104 units in the private sector and 103 units in the cooperative sector.
Out of these 207 units, 59 mills are located in Marathwada and Vidarbha divisions. The process of crushing sugarcane and production of sugar in the state is almost over and due to better production, the stock with the sugar mills has increased.
When sugarcane crushing started in November, the conditions were challenging and the state was estimated to produce between 85-90 lakh tonnes of sugar, but the unseasonal rains of October 2023 benefited the sugarcane crop greatly and sugar production went beyond 110 lakh tonnes ahead of the 2022-23 season.
