Sharp Surge in Betel Nut Exports from Bangladesh to India

New Delhi. The Central Government has accepted on the basis of data that there has been a tremendous increase in the export of betel nut from Bangladesh and Myanmar to India during the last few years.
According to the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, a big increase was recorded in the export of betel nut between the financial year 2021-22 to 2024-25. The total value of betel nut exported from Bangladesh to India was $ 132.90 in the financial year 2023-24, which jumped to $ 530.60 lakh in 2024-25.
However, during this period, the total cost of betel nut imported into India decreased slightly from $ 1479.90 lakh to $ 1434.50 lakh.
These figures clearly show that Bangladesh's share in the gross expenditure on imported betel nut in India jumped from 9 per cent in 2023-24 to 37 per cent in 2024-25.
Similarly, betel nut worth $156.10 lakh was exported from Myanmar to India in the financial year 2023-24, which increased to $332 lakh in 2024-25.
On the other hand, import of betel nut from Sri Lanka decreased and less imports were also made from Indonesia. According to available government data, the expenditure on imported betel nut from Sri Lanka was recorded at $698.70 lakh in 2023-24, which decreased to $359.70 lakh in the financial year 2024-25.
Similarly, the total expenditure on imported betel nut from Indonesia declined from $431.40 lakh to $153.60 lakh during this period.
Earlier, betel nut worth $ 2581.90 lakh was imported in India during the financial year 2022-23 and $ 901.80 lakh in 2021-22.
