New Delhi. The central government is making necessary preparations for the purchase of Kharif pulse crops (tuvar and urad), maize and onion at minimum support price (MSP) in 76 districts of 12 states of the country. It is known that MSP is not determined for onion.

It is purchased by cooperative agencies like NAFED and NCCF. Such districts have been identified for the purchase of pulses, maize and onion where the reach of cooperative agencies is very less or negligible.

Pulses and onion will be purchased so that it can be brought to the market for retail sale if required, while maize will be purchased mainly for supply to ethanol manufacturers.

It is worth mentioning that 15 percent of the requirement of pulses in the country is met through imports from abroad.

National Cooperative Consumer Federation (NCCF) has signed an agreement with farmers to increase the scope of cultivation of pulses and maize in tribal districts of 12 states of the country. Under this,

farmers have been assured of purchase of their products at minimum support price. It is worth mentioning that NCCF is a subordinate agency of Central Consumer Affairs Department. This agency will also purchase onions at the prevailing market price.

The 76 districts of 12 states which have been identified for purchase of pulses and maize include Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gujarat, Telangana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

NCCF has also started registration of producers for purchase at support price. Tuvar crop will come later but the arrival of new goods of Urad and Maize can start soon.
