Palm Oil Exporting Nations Keen to Partner with India

Mumbai: Concerns regarding the impact of biodiesel policies in top traditional suppliers like Indonesia and Malaysia on India's palm oil imports have prompted other producing and exporting nations to seek a foothold in the vast Indian market. India is the world's largest importer of palm oil; until now, imports were sourced from a limited number of countries.

The Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPPC) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing cooperation with India to ensure edible oil security, maintain sustainability in palm oil production, and strengthen the supply chain. The Council emphasizes India's immense strategic importance to palm oil-producing nations.

Palm oil is produced in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Colombia, and various other countries across Asia, Africa, and South America. Since India previously met its palm oil requirements through imports from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, there was little need to source it from elsewhere. However, a significant future supply shortfall is anticipated from Indonesia—the primary supplier—due to the implementation of a mandate requiring 50 percent palm oil content in biodiesel production.
