Northeast Monsoon and Reservoir Levels in India
★ The northeast monsoon began five days earlier than scheduled on October 15, but cumulative rainfall from October to December was 3% below the 50-year average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
★ The monsoon officially withdrew from Tamil Nadu on January 27.
★ IMD forecasts above-normal rainfall across most parts of India from January to March.
★ Rainfall in November was 55% below average, while December saw 74% above the long-term average (LPA).
★ Total rainfall from October to December was 117.4 mm, compared to the LPA of 121 mm.
Reservoir Levels Below Ten-Year Average
★ As of January 23, the storage in 155 reservoirs across the country stood at 119.5 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is 66% of the total storage capacity, below the ten-year average.
