New Delhi. Due to the lack of proper registration process (system) in various states, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has extended the time limit for nomination of food production units to receive used cooking oil from food business operators (Food Business Operators or FBOs).

A notification has been issued by the Authority in this regard, stating that the validity period of nomination of 63 non-food production units of the country has been extended for the next one year i.e. till 31 July 2026 or till the registration system is systematically established in the states, the time limit will be considered extended.

According to the information issued by the Authority, it will be necessary for the non-food production units (NFPU) to fully follow the SOP, orders and guidelines issued by FSSAI and if those instructions are not followed properly, the Authority will have the right to cancel the nomination of these units.

It is worth mentioning that in March 2022, the Authority had ordered food business operators across India to enroll themselves as NFP units to collect used cooking oil.

This rule was for operators whose daily consumption of edible oil for cooking is more than 50 liters. These operators were also asked to keep a record of the use of cooking oil and were directed to dispose it only to the agencies authorized by the Authority. The Authority has also issued guidelines for the enrollment of NFP units for the collection of used cooking oil.
