New Delhi. If the data of the apex body of private sugar mills - Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) is to be believed, then the sugarcane production area at the national level has improved by 13 thousand hectares from 57.11 lakh hectares last year to 57.201 lakh hectares this time.

On the other hand, the Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated the sugarcane sowing area to jump by 1.60 lakh hectares from 55.70 lakh hectares to 57.30 lakh hectares this time.

Usually the data of ISMA is considered reliable because it is based on the analysis of images obtained from satellite and is more accurate.

According to ISMA data, during 2025, compared to 2024, the area under sugarcane in Uttar Pradesh decreased from 23.30 lakh hectares to 22.57 lakh hectares, in Tamil Nadu it slipped from 2.07 lakh hectares to 2.05 lakh hectares, in Gujarat it jumped from 2.31 lakh hectares to 14.93 lakh hectares and in Karnataka it increased from 6.40 lakh hectares to 6.76 lakh hectares.

In other important sugar producing states of the country - Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana etc., the area under sugarcane cultivation decreased from 9.21 lakh hectares last year to 8.71 lakh hectares this time.

Although the overall area under sugarcane cultivation has increased by only 13 thousand hectares, still a huge increase in sugar production is being estimated because due to good monsoon rains and favorable weather,

the average yield rate of sugarcane and the average recovery rate of sugar from sugarcane are expected to increase this time. This time, if sugar production decreases in Uttar Pradesh, then Maharashtra will easily compensate for it.
