News Capsule: Tur Prices Rise Gradually on Better Demand, Tight Supplies
★ Tur prices are expected to remain firm and rise gradually in the near term, supported by improving demand, lower domestic arrivals, low stocks at Chennai port and firm dealer offers.
★ Prices of tur from Myanmar and Africa, along with domestic tur, strengthened in the week ended August 22 as mills increased buying at prevailing prices. Tur dal demand also showed early signs of improvement in some markets.
★ Slow imports and a negative import balance supported Myanmar tur prices during the week. Burma Lemon tur prices remained firm in Chennai and Delhi due to limited domestic selling, firm cost and freight offers, and increased preference among millers for African and Lemon tur.
★ Concerns over new-crop African supplies and deficient rainfall in key growing regions of Maharashtra and southern India also supported market sentiment.
★ Market participants expect tur prices to strengthen gradually rather than witness a sharp rally. Lower supplies from Karnataka, delays in arrivals of the new kharif crop, improving demand, limited imports and uncertainty over African cargoes are likely to support prices.
★ However, larger imports later in the season and expectations of a better domestic crop could limit further gains.
