News Capsule: Tur Market Supported by Tight Import Outlook and Lower Crop Prospects
★ The tur (pigeon pea) market continues to remain firm, supported by higher import costs, slowing arrivals from Myanmar and expectations of lower production in key African supplying countries.
★ According to trade sources, most tur shipments from Myanmar have already reached Indian ports, and import arrivals are expected to slow in the coming months. At the same time, production in African countries, another major source of India's tur imports, is expected to decline by around 30–35% from last year, raising concerns over future import availability.
★ Domestic arrivals remain steady but are relatively limited. Traders expect arrivals of the current crop to decline significantly over the next month, which could further tighten supplies in the domestic market.
★ Market sentiment is also being supported by expectations of lower tur acreage and production during the ongoing kharif season. Although consumer demand remains subdued, the combination of tighter import supplies, lower domestic availability and concerns over the upcoming crop is expected to keep the market well supported.
★ We believe that the tur market is likely to remain firm in the near to medium term, with supply-side concerns continuing to underpin prices despite relatively weak demand.
