News Capsule: India: Rice Procurement Up 4% to Nearly 43 Million Tonnes
★ Rice procurement for the Central Pool by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) during October 2025 to January 2026 stood at 42.95 million tonnes (429.5 lakh tonnes), up 3.7% from 41.41 million tonnes (414.1 lakh tonnes) a year ago.
★ The government has fixed the Kharif rice procurement target for 2025-26 at 46.35 million tonnes (463.5 lakh tonnes).
★ In 2024-25, total rice procurement from both Kharif and Rabi seasons stood at 54.52 million tonnes (545.2 lakh tonnes).

Uttar Pradesh: 3.9 million tonnes (8.2% increase)
Madhya Pradesh: 3.41 million tonnes (17.1% increase)
Andhra Pradesh: 2.74 million tonnes (99% increase)
Tamil Nadu: 1.1 million tonnes (112% increase)
Punjab: 10.49 million tonnes (9.7% decline)
Haryana: 3.6 million tonnes (almost stable)
Chhattisgarh: 7.3 million tonnes (4.3% increase)
Odisha: 2.8 million tonnes (5.1% decline)
Maharashtra: 0.51 million tonnes (6.3% decline)
Bihar: 1.33 million tonnes (19% decline)

Paddy: 55.22 million tonnes

★ The current rice stock is nearly nine times higher than the buffer norm of 7.61 million tonnes. Wheat stock is also nearly double the buffer norm of 13.8 million tonnes.

★ The government has allocated 0.52 million tonnes (5.2 lakh tonnes) of rice for ethanol production.
★ Rice for ethanol is being supplied at a subsidised rate of ₹23,200 per tonne, against an economic cost of ₹41,733 per tonne.
