News Capsule: Govt May Introduce Standard Pack Sizes for Edible Oils to Improve Price Transparency
★ The Department of Consumer Affairs is considering introducing standard pack sizes for edible oils to make price comparison easier for consumers. Industry bodies said that multiple pack sizes such as 650 gram, 700 gram, 810 gram, and 870 gram often create confusion and make it difficult for buyers to compare prices accurately.
★ The proposed standard pack sizes may include 200 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre, 2 litre, 3 litre, 4 litre, 5 litre, 15 litre, and 20 litre/kg packs. The rule could apply equally to both domestically produced and imported edible oils.
★ Industry associations including SEA, SOPA, and IVPA suggested keeping packs below 200 ml outside the framework to ensure affordable small packs remain available for consumers.
