News Capsule: Brazil May Face Record Wheat Imports of 9 Million Tonnes in 2026
★ Brazil could import a record 9 million tonnes of wheat in 2026 as lower acreage, high production costs and adverse weather weigh on domestic output.
★ Safras & Mercado has cut Brazil’s wheat production estimate to 5.9 million tonnes from 7.2 million tonnes earlier, mainly due to reduced acreage and drought in the Cerrado region.
★ In Rio Grande do Sul, wheat acreage fell 24% to 879,200 hectares, while production is expected to decline 28% to 2.57 million tonnes. In Parana, acreage dropped 13.5% to 855,000 hectares, with production forecast 21% lower at 2.14 million tonnes. The two states account for around 80% of Brazil’s wheat production.
