New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that after a hiatus of nearly two weeks, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance into the western part of the country around June 23, as weather conditions are becoming favorable.
Due to a rainfall deficit in Maharashtra, the pace of sowing for crops such as *arhar* (pigeon pea), soybean, cotton, and other *kharif* crops is very slow; the state government is advising farmers not to rush into sowing but to wait for good monsoon rains.
The monsoon's western trough has remained stationary over Solapur and Harnai in Maharashtra since June 8, but it is expected to not only advance but also become more active starting next week. The monsoon trough is likely to extend towards Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
Its eastern end has already reached Bengal and Sikkim. Rainfall is also expected in some parts of Chhattisgarh. Currently, a monsoon trough is passing through Harnai, Solapur, Hyderabad, Bhadrachalam, Koraput, Phulbani, Ranchi, Muzaffarpur, and Jamui.
