Karnataka tops the production of maize, pigeon pea and sunflower

Karnataka's agricultural dominance has been reaffirmed with its leading position in the production of key crops. According to the Economic Survey Report for 2024-25, the state emerged as the top producer of maize, pigeon pea, and sunflower in India, underscoring its growing contribution to the nation's food security.

  • Maize: Karnataka's maize production reached 57.10 lakh tonnes, accounting for 15.16% of India's total production. This surpassed Bihar (56.30 lakh tonnes) and Madhya Pradesh (43.40 lakh tonnes), positioning Karnataka at the forefront of maize production in the country.

  • Pigeon Pea: The state also led pigeon pea (tur) production with 10.20 lakh tonnes, representing about 30% of the national output. Maharashtra followed with 8.90 lakh tonnes, while Uttar Pradesh produced 4 lakh tonnes.

  • Sunflower: Karnataka's dominance in sunflower production is especially notable, producing 70,000 tonnes, which constitutes 42% of India’s sunflower yield. Haryana and Odisha were the second and third largest producers, with 16.61% and 13.26% of the national share, respectively.

Additionally, Karnataka secured the second position in the total production of coarse grains, producing 77.90 lakh tonnes, just behind Rajasthan (80.90 lakh tonnes) and ahead of Madhya Pradesh (58.40 lakh tonnes). In sugarcane production, Karnataka holds the third position, producing 418.10 lakh tonnes, trailing Uttar Pradesh (2158.10 lakh tonnes) and Maharashtra (1120.90 lakh tonnes).

This agricultural strength is pivotal for Karnataka’s role in supporting national food security and its growing influence in India’s farming landscape.
