The All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA) has reduced its estimate for India’s sugar production in the 2025–26 season (October–September) to 283 lakh tonnes. Earlier, the estimate was 296 lakh tonnes, indicating a cut of about 13 lakh tonnes.
Lower yields in key producing states due to adverse weather conditions are cited as the main reason.
Maharashtra’s production estimate has been reduced to about 99 lakh tonnes.
Uttar Pradesh output is also expected to be lower at around 91 lakh tonnes.
Gross sugar production for 2025–26 is estimated at 315 lakh tonnes, of which about 32 lakh tonnes may be diverted for ethanol production.
For comparison, India’s sugar production in 2024–25 was about 262 lakh tonnes.India sugar output estimate cut
