★ In FY 2024–25, India imported the highest volumes from Mozambique (3.49 lakh tons) and Tanzania (3.18 lakh tons). Other key sources included Myanmar, Sudan, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Uganda.
★ Last year, India’s domestic tur production was favorable, and international production also increased. With record imports, domestic availability of tur has remained strong. Prices that touched ₹10,000 per quintal last year have now dropped by nearly 40%.
★ However, weak prices right before the sowing season may impact acreage. The longer crop cycle of tur is also discouraging farmers, which could affect planting decisions—though it's too early to conclude.
★ The central pool holds a satisfactory stock of tur, which is expected to be released in the market later. Imports from Myanmar are ongoing, while African tur is expected to arrive post-August. Crop conditions in African nations are reported to be satisfactory.
★ If demand improves in the upcoming months, there is potential for a modest price recovery.
