Thiruvananthapuram. Heavy rains occurred in Telangana, Kerala and Mahi yesterday as the southwest monsoon appears to have become active again in these regions. Due to ongoing weather activities over the Bay of Bengal, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in the southern peninsula in the coming days.
A warning of very heavy rainfall has been issued for Kerala and Mahi between June 14 and 16. Additionally, heavy rains are likely in coastal and southern interior Karnataka, northern interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. The monsoon had been sluggish over the past several days, leading to a noticeable lack of rainfall.
According to the Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall was recorded yesterday in several states including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and coastal Karnataka. A western disturbance is believed to be the cause of this activity.
The department noted that a western disturbance has been stalled over southern Iran and neighbouring Afghanistan for the last two days. It may begin to affect northwestern India from June 13. This disturbance is expected to move southward and merge with easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal. However, it remains uncertain whether this interaction will result in the formation of a low-pressure area.
Meanwhile, a large monsoon trough is forming over the western Pacific Ocean, and its intensity is increasing. Around the same time the western disturbance begins impacting northwestern India, this monsoon trough is expected to become fully active in southwestern China. Heavy rains were also reported in many parts of China yesterday.
