Saskatoon. Harvesting and preparation of lentil crop is almost over in top producing provinces of western Canada like Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Government agency- StatsCan has estimated the lentil production in Canada to jump by 44 percent from 18.02 lakh tonnes last year to 25.90 lakh tonnes this time.

Its production is also expected to increase in Australia and America. But mainly red lentils are produced in Australia.

The price of green lentils of all categories has strengthened due to limited arrival and good demand in the markets of western Canada.

The price of thick green lentils of number 2 quality or better has increased to 53 cents per pound while the price of small green lentils has also improved to 48-49 cents per pound.

The price of medium green lentils is being reported to be 46 cents (35 US cents) per pound. There is no clear reason for this rise in prices, but it seems that the market is gaining momentum due to strong demand from abroad.

On the other hand, the price of red lentils remains stable at 29-30 cents per pound for October-November movement.

Buyers' interest is mainly seen in green lentils, whose export demand remains very strong. The arrival of new lentils will start gaining momentum in Australia from October-November.
