Government May Inspect Sugar Mills Starting Next Month

New Delhi: In view of the recent sharp surge in domestic sugar prices, the Central Government has decided to initiate physical inspections of all sugar mills next month to verify their outstanding stock and sales figures. The stock verification drive will be conducted from August 1 to August 14. The government maintains that the actual stock position at the mills must align with the recorded sales data. Any discrepancy found could lead to punitive action against the mill, including the imposition of fines.
The government has directed all sugar mills to maintain accurate records of product dispatches and sales documentation to ensure there is no scope for errors, irregularities, or manipulation during the inspection. The stock of sugar remaining with the mill after sales must match the previously declared figures.
The stock verification teams will comprise officials from the Directorate of Sugar and Vegetable Oils (under the Union Ministry of Food) and state government officials. The Department of Food and Public Distribution has informed the sugar mills about this exercise via a formal letter.
Sugar prices have witnessed a sharp increase of over 15 percent in the last few weeks. Market rumors suggested that sugar supply and availability would remain tight in the coming months, leading to a scenario of soaring prices. This speculation triggered panic buying.
Concerns were also raised regarding potential damage to the sugarcane crop due to weak Southwest monsoon rainfall; the country received 16 percent less rainfall than the five-year average between June 1 and July 24. Last week, ISMA and NFCSF expressed concern over speculative buying, while the All India Sugar Trade Association asserted that the country has adequate sugar stocks and there is no need for hasty, bulk purchasing.
